PARISH FAMILY PICNIC – Sept 19th

St. Andrew the Apostle Parish’s Family Fun Run and Picnic will be held on Sunday, September 19, from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on the grounds of Holy Cross College. Make plans to come and enjoy the fun. Free popcorn, drinks and snowballs will be served! See the school website for more information.

ATTENTION: Alumni of the St. Andrew Class of 1975 – There will be a 35-year reunion the weekend of October 8-10, 2010. The main event will be a reception held at the Court of Two Sisters on Saturday night, October 9, from 7:00 to 10:00 PM. DIVERSITY MINISTRY NEEDS HELPERS!

The purpose of the diversity ministry is to bring all people of faith together to begin the process of understanding that we are all children of God and to create a parish inclusive of all races, cultures, ages and disabilities. At present, we are planning three functions this fiscal year, which includes a Diversity mass, followed by a luncheon. Our events are scheduled for October (we honor our Asian parishioners), December (we honor our Latin American parishioners) , and January (we honor our African American parishioners.) We really need your help. If you could give us just an hour of your time to spend on these projects, we would appreciate it. Our next planning meeting is scheduled for August 26th at 7:00 PM in the Rectory Conference Room. If you can assist, please call Jerry Fiegel at 433-2661 or Darlene Thomas at 398-0056 or call the Parish Rectory.

SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING – The Archdiocese now requires anyone who meets with children on any property of the Archdiocese to participate in a Safe Environment Training. There will be a class held at St. Andrew on Tuesday, August 31, at 7:00 PM in the Cafeteria. If you are not able to attend this meeting, there are many offered throughout the Archdiocese during the upcoming months. If you have any questions or need to know when and where another class is offered please call the Religious Ed office (393-0140) or the Rectory (393-2334).

FALL ACTIVITIES

SCRIPTURE STUDY – Classes will resume on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 7:30 PM in the church and Thursday, September 9, 2010, at 9:30 AM in the SANYO building. We will be studying The Footprints of God series “Jesus – The Word Became Flesh”. This is a DVD series with questions for small group discussion. To register for this class call the Religious Education office.

CONFIRMATION NEWS – All students preparing to receive Confirmation on October 13, 2010 must attend the Confirmation Retreat scheduled for October 3, 2010 beginning at 9:00 AM in the Tower/Gym.

REGISTRATION FOR PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION CLASSES – currently going on. Registration forms can be found in the back of church or call (393-0140) the Religious Education Office between the hours of 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Forms should be dropped off or mailed to the Religious Education Office at 3103 Eton St., New Orleans, LA 70131.

The RCIA (Rites of Christian Initiation of Adults) process will resume meeting in September. Adults interested in becoming Catholic are prepared for baptism through this process. If someone you know is interested in becoming a Catholic or learning more about what the Catholic faith teaches, please contact the Religious Education office. Parishioners seeking to learn more about the teachings of the Church may find working with the RCIA team an excellent way to accomplish this goal.

Confirmation interviews will be held during the month of June. Information on these interviews will be mailed out to the candidates. Please contact the Religious Education office if you have any questions. The Religious Education office will be closed during the month of July.

PASTORAL COUNCIL ELECTIONS

Congratulations to our newly elected Pastoral Council Members: KEN CONRAD, JORGE CONTRERAS, and DEBRA GUIDROZ. Ken and Debra will be serving three year terms and Jorge will be serving a two year term. Thank you to all who ran for these positions and for all of our parishioners who voted. The Pastoral Council is very important because its purpose is to serve as a planning and advisory board to the Pastor and to aid in serving the needs of the parish. The Council shares in the decision making process by assisting the Pastor in determining and evaluating the parish vision, mission, goals and objectives that improve the quality of life in the community. If you have any questions or suggestions for our parish, please feel free to contact any of the current Pastoral Council Members. The Order of St. Louis IX Medallion to DAVID and MARYBETH LASSERE and PAM and PAUL WAGUESPACK – On May 2nd, Archbishop Aymond personally presented them with one of the highest and most cherished honors of the Archdiocese, the Order of St. Louis IX Medallion. We want to congratulate David, Marybeth, Pam, and Paul and thank them for generously sharing their time and talent with this parish and the archdiocese.

The Tommy Award will be presented to Richie Babin, Maintenance Supervisor, on Saturday, June 5th at 4:30 pm mass. Richie has worked for many years at St. Andrew Parish and has been a vital part of both the school and the parish. He was the project manager for both the construction of “The Tower” and the renovation of the church. A big thank you goes to Richie for all his years of service and dedication to both the children of our school and the people in our parish!

Other award winners: TYLER LOGA was presented with the St. Timothy Award which recognizes outstanding youth who exemplify Christian service, Catholic leadership and good moral standards. The recipients of this award are not only outstanding in their church parish but also in the larger archdiocesan community, displaying high ideals and spiritual growth. TYLER LOGA, DAVID BEYER and ELLEN YOKUM were given the Outstanding Youth Award for St. Andrew Parish. SAMMY MERRITT was honored by the local Serra Clubs of New Orleans as an altar server of the year for St. Andrew the Apostle Parish. Altar server recognition in the parish went to: EMILY JUNEAU for altar server of the year, VERONICA LEBLANC and ZACK SMITH for rookie altar servers of the year, and TEAM K – RAY, EMILY, and MEGAN KLEEFISCH and TYLER MICELI as altar server team of the year.
